Training Workshop on Monitoring and Evaluation Basics for Development Practitioners - Tanzania

The Monitoring and Evaluation Training Workshop is part of Sambodhi's endeavour to enhance understanding of Research in Monitoring and Evaluation in particular among practitioners and scholars.

Training aims

This Training on M&E aims to demystify and de-construct the subject for professionals working on cutting edge development interventions. Specifically, the training aims to:

  • Provide conceptual clarity and facilitate better understanding of monitoring and evaluation systems (Logical Frameworks, Results Based Management, Theory of Change)
  • Enhance knowledge of key considerations in design and implementation of monitoring systems (Refining the logic model, Embedding reliable indicators)
  • Augment of the knowledge fundamental tenets and practical aspects of impact evaluation
  • Learn about popular research designs used today (Experimental, Quasi-Experimental and Non-Experimental Designs)
  • Analyze dummy data to compute intervention outcome using Microsoft Excel

Why this training?

The programming and practice of development interventions has evolved significantly in the new millennium.  Development institutions today are far more cognizant of the need for objective planning, efficient implementation and effective delivery of development outcomes.

These advances have increased the need for responsive Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) systems to be instituted within projects and organizations. An appropriately designed and executed M&E system not only facilitates greater learning and reflection, it also helps institutions build greater ownership among stakeholders by improving upstream and downstream communication. It is therefore imperative for development practitioners to familiarize themselves with the 'nuts & bolts' of M&E.

With this objective in mind, Sambodhi is organizing a two-day M&E Training at Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania on 26th-27th January 2017.

Course Content

1. Development Interventions and the Theory of Change
Sound intervention logic enhances the probability of achieving envisioned outcomes. By revisiting project fundamentals, this session would aim at developing shared understanding of the concept of theory of change.

2. M&E Fundamentals
The session would aim at defining and distinguishing M&E as well as understanding various M&E typologies.

3. Designing Indicators
Indicators are central to any M&E system. This session would aim at defining indicators and indicator types. It will also help participants develop skills in identifying good indicators in a given intervention context.

4. The M&E Plan I Performance Monitoring Plan
The real value of M&E is in enabling interventions achieve desired perfor mance. This session would aim at developing shared
understanding of constituents of the M&E plan primarily the performance management framework.

5. Impact Evaluation Designs
The session would aim at developing understanding of various evaluation designs to address the evaluation questions of measurement of change and its attribution to implemented interventions.

6. Practical Issues in M&E
Two parallel sessions would aim at identifying key issues in M&E and possible ways of addressing them.

Pedagogy

In consonance with the programme design, the overarching training method is based on  the principles of participatory adult learning that would build upon the experiential learning of participants. The programme pedagogy focuses on interactive group learning and aims both at knowledge development and skill upgradation through peer learning. Reading and resource  material  developed by leading subject experts augments classroom experience. Training being a mutual learning process, the programme is built on the premise I hear,  I forget; I see, I remember; I do, I understand.
